Idea projektu

The central theme of the design subject for the autumn semester was the integration of the circular approach and recycling in the design of construction. During the semester we focused on the Netherlands, in particular Utrecht.
The assignment was to design a circular pavilion for the botanical gardens of the Utrecht University campus, which, due to its location, functions as both an entrance building and a visitor centre. An important aspect was that the building should be constructed partly from recycled, deconstructed materials, using elements from a building at the university (Martinus G. de Bruingebouw) that was scheduled for demolition.

Popis projektu

Initially, the concept of a circular pavilion seemed very far-fetched for us, but as we got deeper into the subject, it became more and more clear that it is not just about recycling materials, but a much broader shift in approach. For us, circularity means a way of living that slows down, simplifies and gets closer to nature.
This philosophy is represented in our building by the metaphor of a nest. We wanted to create a place where people could retreat from the noisy world and find inner tranquillity. Tarpaulins and boxes are the basic elements of the building. These two elements are closely linked: if either is removed, the whole structure falls apart. The boxes accommodate functions that require a more traditional space, while the tarp provides a flexible space underneath.
By incorporating elements from the donor building, we have both been environmentally conscious and given the building a unique character. The history of recycled materials therefore lives on in our building.

Technické informace

The character of the building was mainly defined by the tarpaulin, which created a special atmosphere and gave the pavilion a unique look. In addition, the recycling of materials from the donor building was a priority: trusses, steel beams, wood cladding, brick elements, electric doors and concrete were also incorporated into the new building.
