Apartment building of medium storey “Smoldering Era” in Izhevsk

Инна Лекомцева

Idea projektu

Krasnaya Street owes its first name – Kurenaya (Куренная) Street - to the coal workers who burned (“Курили” – «Kuren» is a dialect word meaning “trees stacked in a special way for later smoldering”) charcoal for the Izhevsk ironworks.
This historical association with fire and charred wood informed the architectural design concept.
Central to the project was the image of a “burning crystal fracture,” a metaphorical representation of the transformation and rebirth of the neighborhood.
To create a “smoldering” and “burning” effect, part of the building is clad with metal perforated panels.
As an additional accent, the wall along the gallery is made of glass bricks, which let in light and create a play of light and shade, adding lightness and airiness to the architecture.
The details of platband ornaments, related to the work of coal workers in the anchor production of the ironworks, were reinterpreted and embodied in the form of wave-shaped belts and marble elements on facades
The courtyard is designed to be a cozy and accessible space for all. The project provides an abundance of greenery, special attention is paid to the provision of a barrier-free environment for people with limited mobility, which involves convenient walkways and ramps that allow free movement throughout the yard.
