Idea projektu

The project idea is to design a contextual, cost effective, sustainable and tribal santal culture representative elementary school with locally available materials and construction techniques.

I had a concept to preserve santal culture and children's blusteriness and make them feel homely and inspire them in learning. Keeping this in mind, a joyful and vibrant school is designed to play in outdoor, semi-outdoor, and indoor spaces. This reflects the spatial organization of traditional santal community homesteads of Bangladesh.

Merging concept with the connection of courtyard, Outdoor and semi-outdoor spaces, and stairs.Special window fenestration for dramatic daylighting in classrooms & the classrooms are placed in a north-south orientation so that they get cross ventilation.

Popis projektu

The site is located at a Santal tribal village of Pachondor Union, Tanore Upazila, Rajshahi,Bangladesh. It's Located in between 24°29' and 24°43' north latitudes and in between 88°24' and 88°38' east longitudes. Situated within "Barind Tract" where is the largest Pleistocene era physiographic unit in the Bangladesh. Where alluvial soil is used in construction of Rajshahi's house due to its ability to provide a stable foundation.

The main challenge was to design a contextual, cost effective, sustainable and tribal santal culture representative elementary school with locally available materials and construction techniques in a rural area. At first I visited the site and analyzed tribal santal house patterns, construction techniques, lifestyle, culture etc. Where occupants are familiar with single or two-storied rectangular enclosed mud house of thatch or metal tin four sided hip roof with a central courtyard. So, I developed building form respecting their house pattern, climate and context.

The main focus of the design is to preserve santal culture and children's blusteriness and make them feel homely and inspire them in learning. Keeping this in mind, a joyful and vibrant school is designed to play in outdoor, semi-outdoor, and indoor spaces. This reflects the spatial organization of traditional santal community homesteads of Bangladesh. Merging concept with the connection of courtyard, Outdoor and semi-outdoor spaces, and stairs. Special window fenestration for dramatic daylighting in classrooms & the classrooms are placed in a north-south orientation so that they get cross ventilation and ensuring thermal comfort to make the school energy efficient.
