Idea projektu

The idea of this project centers around the adaptive reuse and restoration of historical buildings on the Zahrádky Castle estate in the Czech Republic. The goal is to breathe new life into the Orangery, Custodian House, and Greenhouse through a concept called “Barrel-Aged Elegance.” This metaphorical design framework draws parallels between the graceful aging of architecture and the maturation of fine wine in oak barrels. The project responds to the need for sustainable heritage preservation and creates a new cultural destination that celebrates viticulture, horticulture, and local history.

Popis projektu

This project consists of three main components:

Custodian House – repurposed as a boutique winery, wine archive, and visitor reception.

Greenhouse – transformed into a horticultural propagation center with educational trails.

Orangery – renovated as an elegant lounge and cultural event venue.

Each structure’s new role is designed to respect its historical integrity while offering immersive, educational, and sensory experiences. Materials such as reclaimed oak, terracotta, and local stone help blend the old with the new in an ecologically responsible way. Visitors follow a curated journey through these spaces, learning about the history, agriculture, and culture of the region.

Technické informace

Structure: Historic preservation techniques like lime mortar repointing, non-invasive ironwork repairs, and controlled microclimates are used to stabilize and enhance original architecture.

Materials: Reclaimed oak (floors, paneling, furniture), natural stone (thermal mass, flooring), and terracotta (roof tiles, planters).

Sustainability: Photovoltaics, rainwater harvesting systems, passive ventilation, and solar water heating systems support self-sufficient energy goals.

Design Metaphors: Barrel curves in arches, wine-hued interiors, and tactile materials create thematic continuity.

Lighting: Ambient warm lighting (2700K) simulates wine cellar ambiance while respecting historic interiors.
