Idea projektu

The Kashitu Secondary School project is planned to demonstrate how educational buildings can be both culturally aware and environmentally friendly in Zambia. By looking to the nation’s past, the design uses traditional round shapes and the building techniques of the Tonga and Bemba peoples. The site which is significant culturally and environmentally, guides the design to include local identity, respond to weather conditions and meet the future needs of the area.
Goals
• Reflect and keep Zambia’s architectural traditions by using circular designs, local materials and shared spaces.
• Use Eco-Friendly Strategies: Try passive cooling, natural light and use materials that are environmentally friendly and sourced nearby.
• Encourage people in the community to get involved and feel responsible for the school environment.
• Support the School’s Development: To design a masterplan that can be phased so the school can grow as the community’s needs change.
Objectives
• Set up classrooms and communal spaces in a circle to encourage everyone to feel united, interact and be part of a group.
• Use Traditional Construction Techniques: Use traditional building methods to make structures more durable and comfortable, helping them last long and be sustainable.
• Use natural strategies to improve the temperature and lighting in your home which will lower your need for mechanical systems.
• Plan the masterplan to make it possible for the school to grow gradually and meet future needs.
• Involve people in your community by letting them help with the construction which can teach them new skills and strengthen community ties.
Conclusion
The Kashitu Secondary School project aims to bring together traditional values and modern features, making the learning space reflect the community’s culture and be sustainable. Supporting local traditions and the community, the project shows that African architectural heritage is valuable in shaping the future of education.

Popis projektu

The Kashitu Secondary School project was designed to meet the educational goals of a Zambian community and to protect and celebrate the area’s cultural and natural heritage. The project includes the planning, design and step-by-step creation of a secondary school that blends traditional Zambian styles with modern and sustainable education facilities.
Main Components of the Project Solution
• Culturally-Inspired Design: The school is designed with circular classrooms and shared spaces which resemble the traditional architecture of the Tonga and Bemba people. They encourage people to feel connected, included and respectful of their community’s traditions.
• Sustainable Construction: Mud, grass and wood from the area are used, along with building methods that have been made more durable for the project. To help the building remain comfortable and strong through different seasons, passive cooling, natural light and raised platforms are all used.
• The plan is phased and flexible: The masterplan is made to adjust over time and be built in stages, so the school can respond to the community’s growth. With this strategy, the organization can last and adapt over the years.
• Community Engagement: Members of the community and local builders are taking part in the construction which teaches them new skills and gives them a sense of being part of the school.
• Integrating the website with its environment:Because the design takes into account the natural features, weather and shape of the land, the school works well and fits in with its surroundings.
What the project will produce
• Masterplan for the entire school campus, including classrooms, areas for administration, common spaces and outdoor courtyards.
• Architectural plans for both circular learning and gathering areas.
• Standards for picking environmentally friendly materials and building techniques.
• Ways to include the community and a step-by-step approach.
• The use of passive techniques to help keep the building comfortable and energy efficient.

Technické informace

The project aims to blend Zambian architectural traditions with new educational needs, using mud, grass and timber which are all locally available. The classrooms and common areas are shaped like circles, like the huts of the Tonga and Bemba, to encourage togetherness, interaction and care for the environment. Elevated platforms prevent the buildings from being flooded and the central courtyards encourage people to interact. Passive cooling and natural lighting are used in the design to make sure the building is comfortable and energy efficient, so less mechanical equipment is needed. Building approaches are adapted from the past to make the houses more durable and able to withstand changes and the flexible masterplan means the community can expand in small steps as needed. The project encourages local residents to be involved in both designing and building which helps them learn new skills and look after the houses over time. In general, the technical approach helps the school be environmentally friendly, cost-efficient and firmly connected to Zambian culture and surroundings.
