Idea projektu

This project for a Higher Secondary School is inspired by the need to create interactive, student-friendly spaces that go beyond traditional classroom layouts. It responds to the problem of disconnected and monotonous school buildings by adopting a vernacular approach—using courtyard-based planning, scattered yet connected blocks, and natural ventilation and lighting.

The design takes cues from traditional Indian architecture, where open-to-sky spaces, shaded walkways, and cluster formations encourage community, comfort, and learning through interaction. A series of courtyards at varying scales is thoughtfully integrated—a large central courtyard acts as the heart of the campus for major gatherings and shared activities, while smaller courtyards serve individual blocks, offering quieter spaces for focused learning and informal interaction. This layered courtyard system enhances connectivity, environmental comfort, and fosters a sense of belonging.

By combining these vernacular principles with modern functionality, the school becomes a place not just for academic learning, but also for social growth, collaboration, and a stronger connection to nature.

Popis projektu

This project consists of several key parts, with the main area being a central courtyard that serves as the heart of the school, providing space for student interaction, outdoor learning, and recreation. Surrounding this central space is a series of smaller courtyards that enhance natural ventilation and daylight while creating inviting zones for informal gatherings. The classroom blocks, laboratories, library, staff rooms, and multipurpose hall are arranged around these courtyards in a scattered yet connected layout, promoting easy access and a sense of openness.

Inspired by vernacular architecture, the design incorporates shaded corridors, verandahs, and strategic building orientation to respond effectively to the local climate. These features ensure thermal comfort and encourage smooth circulation throughout the campus. Overall, the project fosters a student-friendly environment that balances functionality with sustainability, creating a vibrant community space for learning and social engagement.

Technické informace

The roof uses traditional Mangalore tiles for durability and natural insulation, reflecting vernacular design. Walls are made of sustainable CSEB blocks or similar local materials, providing thermal comfort. Transparent skylights supported by H-profile and U-profile steel structures bring in natural light while maintaining ventilation, blending traditional materials with modern construction techniques.
