The proposed convention center in Semmencheri, Chennai is envisioned as a landmark public institution that celebrates the region's maritime legacy while serving as a hub for cultural exchange, innovation and community engagement.
The core design concept, “The Tidal Confluence,” draws inspiration from the historic coastal trade routes, fishing harbors, and dynamic oceanic forms that have shaped Tamil Nadu’s identity for centuries.
Semmencheri lies at the intersection of urban growth and coastal culture. With rapid development driven by nearby IT parks, educational institutions, and residential neighborhoods, the area is primed for a civic space that can anchor cultural activity and professional engagement. Its location near the Bay of Bengal and along historic maritime paths supports the thematic framework, grounding the project in both geography and history.
The scope of this project includes the planning, design, and development of a multi-functional, climate-responsive convention center that reflects the maritime heritage of Tamil Nadu and addresses the diverse needs of its surrounding urban, institutional, and coastal context. The solution integrates architecture, landscape, infrastructure, and user experience in a cohesive, sustainable framework.
The construction of the building is done using steel. The outer shell is made of space frame structure with steel cladding, supporting its organic form. The basement is constructed using retaining walls.
