Idea projektu

The expansion of shrimp aquaculture in Sri Lanka over the past three decades has dramatically changed the coastal landscape, in particular by converting mangrove forests. The current study quantified these impacts in the kokkilai lagoon, an area of the country that has experienced some of the most destructive development.

The area of shrimp farms increased by 2777% over this 19-year period, with salt pans expanding by 60%. Mangroves declined in area by 34% and coconut groves increased by 17%. Because of problems with disease, many intensive shrimp farms are abandoned after a few years, leaving denuded and unproductive landscapes; here a large majority of farms (90% of the total area of shrimp aquaculture) were found to be abandoned.

These results demonstrate the scale of environmental degradation caused by intensive shrimp farming in kokkilai, and highlight the need for an entirely new aquaculture model in Sri Lanka

Popis projektu

kokkilai lagoon's surrounding area faces a huge distraction because of shrimp farming, the salt industry, and sand mining.. Thennamaravadi, kokkilai area is the most degraded area of those industries. The area is located on the west boundary of the lagoon and 9km away from polmudai road
Although it is a very important area, no one pays attention to its development of this area and it has the potential to develop in different aspects. Especially in Mullaitivu. Located very close to the Trincomalee area.
water pollution, ecological degradation, and the gradual loss of rural landscape
There is also maritime importance, but no attention is paid to the Kokkilai area. There are many benefits to having a project
Although an environment of special importance, it does not benefit economically or environmentally.
but,
The objective of this project is to recreate the land in an economically, socially as well as environmentally significant manner.

Technické informace

Disordered and extreme harvesting of natural resources created Sevier damage to the site (kokkilai lagoon) and villagers' lifestyles and industries. So, the project will help to replenish degraded coastal locations due to shrimp farming activities through landscape intervention developing a symbiosis connection between the ecosystem and humans. This will be done through sustainable landscape practices of seaweed farming, Mangrove plantation, aqua farming, and regenerating salt marshes to enhance villagers' lifestyles and quality of life. and all the built structures are made of with the environment eco-friendly materials, such as bricks and wood. all the structures are manually made simple structures. all the designs are made without harm to the eco-sensitive environment
