The campus as an urban joint

Idea projektu

The project started by thinking about the concept "learning process"(a concept we were taught at the beginning of the project).
The conceptual model focused on the idea that with persistence deep learning brings deep understanding. During this process information is gathered, the understanding expands and details are exposed. (Expansion of the model, light going through it, use of materials: iron net and 'broken' wood that was cut using a chisel and a hammer. A repetitive action, somewhat like learning, that creates unique and different pieces of "information").

The urban action: Bratislava is a city full of parks and green spaces as well as urban streets with diverse and interesting structural typology that invites you to wander through them. Today, the campus seems as if it isolates itself from the rest of the city. The idea was integration of the campus with the city while making it an integral part of it. In practice, treating the campus as an urban link that connects between a noisy central commercial street and a quiet and pleasant park. All this while the campus takes an active role as a new street that connects these areas, fertilizes them and even connects residents and students to create new opportunities. In addition, I wanted to free up the ground floor of the campus and open up the view to the city. To create a connection that fits the view and is both physical and emotional.

Popis projektu

The architectural language: Derived from the conceptual model while adapting it to the needs of the structure and the program. The iron net became a curtain wall and the wood chips became metal panels sitting on lightweight construction. Using these panels there is a game of light and a game of interior and exterior in the structure, allowing views of the city and the park. The red diagonal panels define space and movement. The design strives to create complexity that includes repetitive areas (For example, in the innovation center that combines practice: a space that consists of a recurring pattern of resting, individual work and group work).

Distribution of the program: The project begins on the commercial ‘Redlinskeho’ street and ends on the Freedom Park. Desiring the connection between noise and silence, the program was structured so that the beginning of the project is in 'quieter' spaces, such as offices. These spaces are low, relatively small and don't let much light in. As we progress with the project we reach spaces that are 'noisy', such as display spaces, shared learning and dining. These spaces are taller, more spacious and allow more light in.
