Myth. Contemporary Cavern

Project idea

The main idea that Pavilion carries is to assemble, to get people
together around the table to create and cooperate. Integrating a
table as a central point in the Lighthouse is a very simple but a
universal symbol. In Armenian culture it is very common to have a
big number of guests and, therefore, a big table in the house.
Wherever my family and I have moved, we use to have one, and so
in Latvia. The fact I loved about moving from home country is that
anyway at some occasion you will notice some friendly Armenian
around and that feeling of uneasy at the new place will be gone.
The same effect I wanted to bring towards architecture students
here, in Riga. Create a ‘bridge’ between students from RISEBA and
RTU (Riga Technical University) to gradually extend and enrich the
community of architects in here.

Project description

In a cave type building, where the landscape is created naturally,
you can explore and find new relationship between your body and
space. At first you may be very embarrassed but then, gradually you
will find your own comfortable space. According to your behavior
you will shape the relationship as in the allegory of the cave by Plato:
using your own philosophy and creative way of thinking you will
experience new gain of knowledge, or an inspiration from the
landscape, or sit and talk with a friend, or drink coffee. Inhabitants
can discover and innovate the function of the Pavilion, rather than
being prescribed.

Technical information

The Lighthouse Pavilion is a stalwart, latticed structure, each unit of
which is composed of fine wooden bars. It forms a semi-transparent,
cubic shaped part of the landscape. The Pavilion has no univocal
separations of floor, ceiling, and wall. A place that one thought was
a floor suddenly becomes a chair, a table, a ceiling from different
positions.
