Yentle’s proposal shows much promise, as he is clearly competent at producing crisp and accurate architectural drawings. The building proposed seems to have a balanced volumetric relationship with the existing built environment, and its form presents an intriguing dialogue with the city.
Slide 8 shows an evocative interior space as the sculptural ceiling juxtaposed with the concrete frame. Similarly, slides 10 and 11 show some elegant use of materials. Slide 11 presents a projection towards the built environment suggesting an interesting relationship with the surrounding urban fabric. Also notable here is the blurred treatment of boundaries between indoor and outdoor. However, in an overall assessment of the visualisations of the interior spaces, they seem barren and unarticulated. They require more development in order to appear more habitable.
Unfortunately, there is critical information missing from the project details that have been provided. An important item that is absent is a well-labeled plan that indicates interior uses, people’s circulation within spatial sequences, accesses, etc. A masterplan should also be provided to indicate the proposed building’s relation with the existing urban fabric. This is especially important since in Yentle’s description the project is referred to as an “oasis” and a “social condenser.” For this intension to be evaluated, more information regarding design hierarchies, site analysis, etc, is required. I would be happy to review this project again if Yentle sends more visual data.
An empty place in the heart of Ghent. A huge paved parking lot. A
piece of no man's land without qualities. Located between the Poel, the
Drabstraat and Korenlei, this place has enormous potential.
The aim of the studio is to design a city building 2.0. A
freely fillable program that serves as a social condenser. An oasis
in the center of Ghent. An open learning platform in relation to the city. A
empty place in the heart of Ghent
The project itself is translated through an interweaving of it
existing office building that accommodates the research center
with a newly designed volume as an expo and planetarium.
With the help of a wooden canopy, it becomes coherent
interaction formed with the original concrete
structure which ensures an extension of the inner space to the outer space
This in conjunction with the transparency of the wooden curtain wall
a link has always been made with the spacious surroundings of the center of Ghent
and the green construction of the site.
The construction exists out of an existing concrete office building and gets interwoven by a new wooden addition creating a poëtic interrelation between each other. The facade of the office building gets opened up by a self bearing diagrid structure made out of wood.
