With great intentions, this school should popularize Ukrainian culinary traditions and make them a part of haute cuisine.

Project description

This educational facility will graduate chefs and cooks, who will show their mastery of cooking in the best gourmet restraunts. It's main goal is to bring Ukrainian cuisine to the worldiwide culinary arena and to spread the word about it abroad.
Kyiv was a center of different restraunts in times when it was a part of Russian Empire. The most famous world chefs opened their cafes and bistros in Kyiv and it had an affect on Ukrainian cuisine also. Since then, it haven't developed a lot, so the objective of this school is to revive national food culture and to show what it worth.

Building of the school will be situated in the historic part of Kyiv, in Podil district on the corner of the streets Spaska and Voloska. Placement of the building affected the design solution. Most of surrounding architecture was built in neo-classicism, art-nouveau and soviet styles, so merely all buildings have pitched roof and strict proportions. Also the high of projected building should be correspondent with other structures around. Moreover, Podil district has it's own specific planning system, what should be taken into account.

The whole complex contains of three parts: two buildings of school and one restraunt between them. This restraunt building serve as the accent to attract customers and visitors. All three structures are connected with each other physically and functionally. After the graduation, students will be able to work as chefs in the restraunt of this complex to train their skills even more. What is more, while studying, students will be invited to special events of the restraunt to gain experience from professionals.

The feature of this project is a recreational area inside the backyard, behind the school building. What is special about it, is that this park is a plaza with cascade gardens and a pond in the middle. This area will be open for students and for regular pedestrians. In the far corner there should be a summer place with pergola and bean-bags under it. Also in the corners of this square, there are small gardens with various spice.

The building itself has diagonal symmetry and has similiar facades looking on both streets. With the first look, this building reminds old factory or bakery. However, there no historical elements in this building, which copy the original style of the old times. The design of school must be associated with such vintage structures but doesn't imitate them. Each corps of school building has three high sections with pitched roofs, which are common among Podil buildings. The main material, that was used is a brick colored with dark grey and white. The second floor is coated with rheinzink, great stylish material, which can serve for a long term. Also, building uses a lot of glass as an accent material. Roofing is made of triple glazing with special sun protection system. Also there are many windows with different size, which break the similiarity of building with historic structures. The most conspicious glass parts are the big facade windows that remind chimneys. It is a part of concept to create an association with old bakery. The main color used on facades is warm yellow, that should be associated with hot cooking processes inside. Nevertheless, colors, which were used inside backyard are pretty different, they are calm and not so provocative.

The restraunt building uses the same materials, except one above the entrance. There is an oxydized copper, which attract people and show visitorss where to go. Also the whole first floor is made of glass, which attracts as well, epesially in the night, when lights are turned on. But what is more important, this glass provides enough insolation. Second floor is more closed, with less glass to create a semi-dark, neat and comfortable atmosphere.
Also, there is a terrace on the second floor with a view on inner park. Visitors can get there with use of stairs from street or with use of stairs inside, as well as lift. This terrace is a comfortable space to spend time in a summer time.
The building has a basement floor, where is a bar for those who like dark places. Also, there are toilets for guests and a wardrobe. In the basement part of school there are several technical rooms.

School has 3 standard classes and 7 culinary classes, where students can train their cooking skills and get regular education. There many wide corridors and lifts to provide easy movement for disabled people. Also there are special toilets for them. Barrier-free space is very important and integral part within modern society. This school is not an exception. There are smooth unhindered ways will be provided for people with disabilities. For example, they can easily get to the park straight from the second floor of the building, by crossing the bridge and descenting by lift. Also there are special elevators on the stairs to easily ascend to the summer terrace.

The structural system of building skeleton frame, constructed with metal columns, beams and truss. These colums are also serve as a part of interior design.
